Brownsberg Nature Park is rainforest on a plateau about 500 m high in Brokopondo District. From its edge there is a wide view over the huge Brokopondo Reservoir, blue water full of green islands to the horizon, with forest all around you. The park covers about 12,000 ha and is run by Suriname's nature conservation foundation. Gold miners came to the area in the late 19th century, among them John Brown, after whom the mountain is named. It has been a nature reserve since 1969. It holds about 1,450 plant species and 350 bird species, including toucans, and howler monkeys. You walk forest trails among giant trees, hear howler monkeys and reach Leo Falls, which pours over a big rock. From lookouts on the edge you see the reservoir and its islands below. At the top are a canteen and visitor buildings. The park is about 98 km in a straight line south of Paramaribo, with a dirt road at the end. One visitor reports entry of about 70 Surinamese dollars. It is best to go with a tour or stay overnight; bring water and insect repellent.
