Yes in July and August, but the water is cold â between eighteen and twenty degrees on the best days, and much colder otherwise. Anyone used to the Mediterranean will find it very cold. The beaches are sandy and clean and the water is shallow for some distance, which suits children despite the temperature.
Sopot, a few stops away on the suburban train, with the longest wooden pier in Europe at over five hundred metres, a wider beach and more life. BrzeĆșno is closer, quieter and less touristed; Sopot is finer and busier. Both are on the same line and can be seen in a day.

A wooden pier extending some hundred and thirty-three metres into the Baltic from BrzeĆșno beach north of GdaĆsk, and the nearest real beach to the city centre. BrzeĆșno has been a seaside resort since the nineteenth century, when the people of GdaĆsk took up sea bathing as a health practice. The first pier was built in 1898, and the present one dates from the start of this century. What makes it worth mentioning is not the pier itself but what surrounds it: a broad sandy beach running for kilometres, pine forest immediately behind it, and a walking and cycling path leading north to further beaches and south towards the port. This is where the people of GdaĆsk go in the evening, rather than the tourists. A practical point: the Baltic is cold â even in July and August the water rarely exceeds twenty degrees, and many find it too cold for a long swim. But walking the beach and the sunset over the water are worth the trip in any weather. Always open and free.
