Climb the waterfall

A curious waterfall in the forest north of Chiang Mai, known as the Sticky Waterfall: its limestone rocks are coated in a rough mineral crust on which algae does not grow, so feet do not slip, and you can walk up the waterfall against the flowing water as if the rock were sticking to your feet. The water tumbles down successive tiers among the trees, and climbing the rocks in the cool water is fun for adults and children, with fixed ropes on the steepest sections. At the top is a clear, colourful spring called the Seven-Coloured Fountain, which feeds the falls. Entry is free; it is a locally run public park, open in daytime from morning to late afternoon, with simple food stalls and parking. No special gear is needed, but clothes that can get wet are useful. It is about an hour and a quarter by car from the city, so make it a half day. Come on a weekday morning to avoid crowds, and avoid the days after heavy rain, when the water surges.
