The Sphinx is a natural rock formation in Bucegi Natural Park in Romania's Bucegi Mountains, at 2,216 metres among the Babele group of rocks. It lies about 28 km in a straight line from Brașov. The rock is 8 metres high and 12 metres wide, and from a certain angle it shows a human face, which earned it the nickname «Sphinx» in 1936 after the Great Sphinx of Giza. Its outline is said to be clearest on 21 November at sunset. It is the remnant of a continuous layer of sandstone and conglomerate that once covered the plateau, carved by rain, wind and freeze-thaw cycles over hundreds of thousands of years. The huge grey rock stands on a broad, bare mountain plateau, its side looking like a face gazing at the horizon. Smaller rocks and short grass surround it under a blue sky, and snow covers the plateau in winter. Visitors take the cable car from Bușteni to Babele station and walk a short way, or hike up on mountain trails. Weather on the plateau is changeable and cold, so bring warm layers.
