A walled old town on a small peninsula in Budva, the centre of tourism on Montenegro's Adriatic coast. Budva is about 2,500 years old, one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic. Inside the walls are narrow lanes paved in white stone, small squares and old churches, including the Orthodox Holy Trinity Church, with cafés and shops, and the Lion of St Mark, symbol of Venice, above the main gate. At the southern tip the Citadel looks out to sea from its walls, over the beaches and the island of Sveti Nikola. Around the town are sandy beaches, a seafront promenade and a marina full of boats. Walking the old town is free, and the Citadel charges a small fee. It gets crowded at the height of summer, so come in the morning or in spring and autumn.
