A national park in the Bükk mountains of northern Hungary, the only one in the country built almost entirely on forested limestone highland. Hungary is largely a country of plains, which is what makes the Bükk different: a limestone plateau rising above nine hundred metres, with caves, springs, narrow valleys and dense beech forest. The park holds more than a thousand known caves, among them caves inhabited in the Stone Age. Among its best-known places is the Szinva valley with its small lakes and stepped waterfalls, one of the most photographed scenes in Hungary, along with a narrow-gauge forest railway running through the valley to walking points. The area is also known for thermal baths and mineral water, including Miskolctapolca, where baths sit inside natural caves. Practical points: the distance from Budapest is about a hundred and forty kilometres north — a full day, and much easier by car. The trails are mountainous and need proper shoes. It combines well with Eger over a two-night stay.

Yes, and that is the ideal arrangement. Eger sits at the edge of the Bükk, so two nights there covers the castle, the Baroque town and the wine cellars on one day, and the mountains, the valley and the caves on the second. That works far better than two separate day trips from Budapest.
It varies. There are short surfaced paths around the Szinva valley suited to families, and longer mountain trails needing fitness and proper shoes. The area is forested and the weather changes, so take an extra layer and water even if the day looks clear.
