The water is monitored and tested by the city authorities through the season with results published, and the swimming lake is separate from the other. The beaches are grass rather than sand with a gentle slope, so they suit children under supervision. The atmosphere is family by day, and it is a local place, so do not expect tourist facilities — bring what you need.

Bundek is a park with two lakes south of the Sava in Novi Zagreb, and its origin is not design but accident: the pits left by gravel extraction for building the Novi Zagreb districts filled with groundwater and became lakes. The place became a popular swimming spot in the 1970s, then was neglected for decades until it was derelict and had a bad reputation, before the city rebuilt it completely in 2006: cleaned water, grass beaches, paths, playgrounds and a running route around the larger lake. Today it is the summer lung of southern Zagreb: families on the grass, swimming in the smaller lake set aside for it, barbecues in the permitted areas, and music festivals in summer. The atmosphere is entirely local rather than touristic, which is an advantage for anyone wanting to see the city as it is. Reached by tram and bus, or on foot across the Sava bridge.
