Surabaya's best-known and liveliest park, in the heart of the city on Darmo street, set around the tomb of Sunan Bungkul, one of the region's early Islamic preachers in the fifteenth century, which people visit at one end of the park. The park has won international awards for public-space design and is held up as a model of Surabaya's turn to a green city. It has walking and jogging paths, shady trees, children's areas, a skate park, an open-air stage for events and stalls of street food. It fills every evening and on Sunday mornings, when the street closes to cars and becomes a promenade. Entry is free and it is open all day. Food at the stalls is cheap and local. Come in the evening or on a Sunday morning to see Surabaya's people at leisure, and try local dishes at the stalls. It is close to the zoo.
