A small national park on a volcanic headland at Burleigh Heads in the southern Gold Coast, protecting a patch of rainforest and basalt columns between two beaches, one of the city's loveliest and handiest outings. A short paved coastal walk circles the headland, passing through the forest and then looking over the ocean from the rocks, where waves break against the basalt columns. In winter you may see humpback whales passing close to shore on migration, and dolphins at any time. The tip of the headland gives a superb view along Burleigh beach to the Surfers Paradise skyline on the northern horizon, and people gather on the grass at sunset. At the foot of the headland are a beach, a park and popular cafés. Entry is free, and the walk is easy and family-friendly, taking about half an hour to an hour. Bring water; early morning is loveliest and coolest.
