The green heart of Baguio, a large historic park in a valley in the city centre, designed by the American architect Daniel Burnham as part of the city plan of 1905, on what had been a meadow of an Ibaloi village. Baguio itself is a mountain city about 1,500 metres up, nicknamed the «Summer Capital» of the Philippines and the «City of Pines» for its cool air and forests. At the centre of the park is a small lake with rowing boats and swan-shaped pedal boats, surrounded by paths shaded by pines, flower gardens, a large sports field and the Melvin Jones grandstand where celebrations are held. Visitors rent bicycles to ride around the lake. The park is where Baguio's families go, full at weekends and in the summer season, when Manila's residents flee the heat for mountain air. From here you can walk to Session Road, the main shopping street, and the public market. It is fairly cool all year, especially in the mornings and evenings, so bring a jacket. Rain is heavy from June to September, so the dry months from November to April are better for a visit.
