The house where Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah, known as Buya Hamka, was born in 1908, one of the best-known Islamic scholars and writers of Indonesia and the Malay world, author of the Quran commentary Tafsir al-Azhar, most of it written in prison, a novelist, historian and preacher, first chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council, and a declared national hero. The house is a traditional rumah gadang on the shore of Lake Maninjau, turned into a small museum holding his books and writings, photographs from every stage of his life, personal belongings, and an account of his life and journeys to Mecca and Egypt, with windows looking out on the lake and mountains among which he grew up. Entry is free or by small donation, and the museum opens in daytime. It is a moving stop for Muslim visitors on a tour of Lake Maninjau, on the road around the lake after descending the forty-four bends, so combine it with the lake and Puncak Lawang in a day from Bukittinggi.

A Minangkabau scholar, Quran commentator and writer (1908-1981) who wrote Tafsir al-Azhar and well-known novels, chaired the Indonesian Ulema Council, and is among the leading figures of Islamic thought in Southeast Asia.
