Restored stone lanes below the castle of Byblos, lined with small shops and cafés under flowering bougainvillea, the loveliest part of the old town for a late-afternoon walk. The shops sell souvenirs, soap and crafts, and Byblos is known for the fossil fish dug from its mountain villages since ancient times, displayed in several shops in the souk. At the edge of the souk stands the Church of Saint John-Mark, built by the Crusaders in the twelfth century, and from there the lane runs down to the small ancient harbour, with a tower at its mouth, fishing boats and seafood restaurants by the water. The souk is open all day and gets busy on weekend evenings and in summer. It pairs easily with the castle and ruins in one visit, and the harbour is a fine place for sunset.
