Cabaceiras is a small town in the semi-arid Cariri of Paraíba, at 300 metres some 180 kilometres from João Pessoa and near Campina Grande, which playfully calls itself «Roliúde Nordestina», the Hollywood of the North-East. More than 25 films have been shot in the area, the best known being «O Auto da Compadecida», filmed in the town centre and surroundings, along with «Cinema, Aspirinas e Urubus» and «Romance», plus the series «Maria e o Cangaço». A film memorial tells the story. It was founded in colonial times by Captain-Major Domingos de Faria Castro on lands of the Oliveira Ledo family. About thirty kilometres away lies the Lajedo de Pai Mateus, a broad granite outcrop scattered with huge rounded boulders, one of the strangest landscapes of the North-East.
