The Cabildo de Jujuy, the old colonial town council building, faces the main square of San Salvador de Jujuy, the city founded by Francisco de Argañarás in 1593. It was here that General Manuel Belgrano presented the new national flag to the townspeople and the army on 25 May 1812, tying the building to the story of the Argentine flag. Damaged by the earthquake of 1863, it was rebuilt between 1864 and 1867 with its arcaded front and long gallery, and declared a National Historic Monument in 1941. In August 2024 a new cultural centre and museum opened inside, telling the history of the city and province with modern displays, along with an archive, a library and an open plaza. The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 9 pm, with tickets sold online, and the facade can be seen free from the square.
