Caburé is a fishing village and beach in Barreirinhas municipality, Maranhão, on a sand spit between the Preguiças river and the ocean, with pale soft sand and plenty of dunes. Its name comes from an Old Tupi word for a small owl with a tuft on its head. It is the usual last stop on the Preguiças river boat trip from Barreirinhas: the boat calls first at Vassouras, with the «Little Lençóis» dunes and its monkeys, then at Mandacaru, where visitors climb the lighthouse, and ends at Caburé with a long stop for lunch and the beach between river and sea. Prices for the trip vary by agency and season, and between shared and private boats.
