Botucatu sits on a high plateau edged by a rocky escarpment known as the Cuesta, and small rivers tumbling off it form the many waterfalls that make the city a nature getaway some 240 kilometres from São Paulo. One of the closest to town is Cachoeira da Marta. The falls lie inside a municipal nature park created in 2002 over about eighteen hectares and run by Botucatu's environment department. Trails through the woods lead down to the main fall and smaller cascades, framed by dense green woodland. Entry is free but needs a time slot booked online, and visits are suspended when it rains, since the trails grow slippery on the descents. Wear proper shoes, bring water and come on a dry day.
