The Buracão waterfall, in the Espalhado Municipal Natural Park in Ibicoara in the south of the Chapada Diamantina, is often called one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Brazil: the river drops 85 metres into a deep rock bowl. It was first recorded in 1998, when hunters found it on private land, and local campaigning led to the land's expropriation and the creation of the park in 2005. The trail runs about 3 km along the Espalhado river and through a canyon that hides the falls until the very end, when the huge opening suddenly appears. A local accredited guide is compulsory (about R$150-200 per group of up to 10), and the R$15 ticket is booked online, with a cap of 200 visitors a day; the park opens 8:00-17:00, last entry 11:00.
