The Ferro Doido waterfall, the «Mad Iron» falls, lies in the municipality of Morro do Chapéu at the northern end of Bahia's Chapada Diamantina. It plunges in several drops from a height of almost a hundred metres according to the local press, though other sources put it at around eighty, over an imposing rock wall. The falls are protected by a Natural Monument created by the state government in 1998 over some four hundred hectares. They lie about eighteen kilometres east of town, a short way north of the bridge where the BA-052 road crosses the river of the same name, so they are easy to reach by car and a short walk to the lookouts at the top of the cliff. The key thing to know is that the falls are dry for most of the year and only fill in the rainy season, when they become a spectacular sight that is widely photographed. In the dry months the cliff and the view over the valley are still worth the stop. Take care near the edge, as there are no railings in places.
