The Mosquito waterfall is a fall of about seventy metres on the Mosquito River in the Marimbus–Iraquara protected area, north of Lençóis in the Chapada Diamantina, and is considered one of the most beautiful falls around Lençóis. Its name comes from what diamond miners once called the tiny diamonds found there, «mosquitoes». The fall lies on private land 38 kilometres from Lençóis, reached by paved road and then dirt track, with the last 980 metres on foot along a trail after leaving cars in a forty-space car park. In the rainy season the flow rises sharply, and the river forms a canyon there. Swimming in the pool at its foot is a highlight, there are two lookouts, and the old farmhouse has become a restaurant. As the land is private, rules apply, among them no smoking, hunting or loud music, and there is an entry fee; check it before going.
