Cacupé is a quiet district in the north-west of Santa Catarina Island, about 16 kilometres from central Florianópolis, washed by the calm waters of the North Bay facing the mainland part of the city. Its Tupi name means «green behind the hill». It was historically tied to the neighbouring village of Santo Antônio de Lisboa and grew with the opening of the SC-401 road around the 1970s. Its shore has five small beaches with narrow sand and many rocks, which stay uncrowded and free of many vendors even at the height of the season. Cacupé is best known for its sunset, when the colours of the sky are mirrored on the bay for those passing along its coast road, and for island cooking based on seafood, in traditional restaurants tied to artisanal fishing and oyster farming. It makes a calm evening away from the busy ocean beaches.
