Caeté is a historic town of about 39,000 people in Greater Belo Horizonte that grew with the gold cycle and saw important events, among them the War of the Emboabas between São Paulo prospectors and the newcomers from Portugal and elsewhere. The area was officially discovered in 1701 by a São Paulo explorer drawn by its gold, and the brothers António and João Leme da Guerra set up the first settlement in 1703, after which thousands of gold seekers poured in. The municipality also includes a small part of the Serra do Gandarela National Park. Today it is known for adventure tourism, especially tree-top rope courses, and lies on the «Rota do Ferro», a cycling trail along an old railway line linking it to Sabará, Barão de Cocais and Santa Bárbara past streams, iron bridges, old stations and tunnels. The Morro Vermelho district has a ten-metre waterfall.
