Caetité is a city of about 55,000 people in the Alto Sertão, the semi-arid highlands of inland Bahia, some 645 kilometres from Salvador, and for more than two centuries the cultural centre of the sertão region. Archaeological sites around it are more than six thousand years old and led to the creation of the Alto Sertão da Bahia Museum. European settlement began in the seventeenth century with cattlemen working for the great Casa da Ponte estate. It is the birthplace of notable figures, the best known being the educator Anísio Teixeira, a pioneer of public schooling in Brazil. Its centre keeps historic buildings from its heyday, it is known for pottery and textiles, and hills and fields surround it. It is an interesting stop for anyone exploring south-west Bahia between Rio de Contas and the sertão uplands.
