Turquoise water in rock.
The Cajón del Azul, the Blue Box, is a deep, narrow gorge where the Azul river runs clear and turquoise between rock walls, in the mountains north of El Bolsón, and one of the area's best-known and loveliest summer hikes. The trail starts at Chacra Wharton in Mallín Ahogado and runs about nine kilometres in some three hours, up and down through forest and over suspension bridges across rivers, until it reaches the narrow gorge where blue water pours between the rocks. Near the gorge a mountain hut offers beds and simple food for those staying the night. Entry is free, but advance registration is compulsory, and in high season numbers are capped at a thousand a day. The huts take cash only, as there is no signal.
