Calaguas is a group of quiet islands off the east coast of Luzon. A long beach of soft white sand meets clear turquoise water, green grassy hills slope down to the sea and dark volcanic rocks line the shore. The group includes the larger islands of Tinaga and Guintinua, little Maculabo and several others, about 200 km from Manila. Tinaga has the long beach of Mahabang Buhangin, known for its white sand. Visitors and campers come despite the lack of lodging, and the local government has set up a programme to manage waste and boat traffic to protect it. You swim in the clear water, walk the long beach, climb the grassy hills to see the islands and sea from above, and camp on the sand. You reach it by boat from the ports of Paracale or Daet, and the beach is about 41 km in a straight line north of Daet. Services are few, so bring your own water and food, and take your rubbish home.
