A research institute and natural history museum in Golden Gate Park, among the largest natural history museums in the world with more than 46 million specimens. It began as a learned society in 1853 and is California's oldest operating museum and research institution. Its building was completely rebuilt in 2008, and its signature is the «Living Roof», a rolling green roof planted with native plants and dotted with round skylights that light the halls below; you can go up to walk on it and look over the park. Under one roof it brings together the Steinhart Aquarium with its coral reef and colourful fish, a planetarium and a four-storey rainforest inside a glass dome where butterflies and birds fly, along with natural history halls. Adult tickets start from about $49 and rise at peak times, per visitor guides. Booking online saves queuing; allow at least half a day and pair it with Golden Gate Park.
