Camamu is a town of about 35,000 people on the «Dendê Coast» of southern Bahia, on the BA-001 coastal road, looking over the broad Camamu Bay, scattered with islands and mangroves, from where boats leave for the Maraú Peninsula and the village of Barra Grande. Its historic centre stands on a hill above the harbour, and the town lives from fishing and from growing dendê palms, cloves and coconuts. Most bay trips start from its quay, making it the sea gateway to Maraú's quiet beaches. Its lands offer many outings in nature: waterfalls, islands, beaches and Atlantic forest trails, the best known being boat trips between the islands of the bay. Local sources give May to the end of October as the best time to visit.
