Campanha is a small historic town of about 16,000 people in southern Minas Gerais, close to Varginha, and one of the oldest towns in the region; some of its streets still keep mansions from the gold era. Bandeirante explorers reached it in the early eighteenth century and found gold, and in 1737 the magistrate of São João del-Rei, Cipriano José da Rocha, set out on an expedition to open the valleys of the Verde and Sapucaí rivers and formally claimed them for the Portuguese Crown. The writer Euclides da Cunha wrote the first chapters of his famous «Os Sertões» here, and one of his sons was born in the town. The Regional Museum of Southern Minas holds pieces of the region's history, and the town is known for handicrafts, especially rugs and carved wooden decorations, with waterfalls and country pousadas in its surroundings. It makes a quiet outing from Varginha or the spa towns of the Circuito das Águas.
