Cape Town's most famous beach, a wide curve of fine white sand on the Atlantic coast, lined with palms, with the Twelve Apostles range rising behind it and Lion's Head to one side, one of the city's loveliest scenes. Victoria Road runs along the beach with restaurants and cafés facing the sea, and in summer it fills with families and young people. It is close to the city centre, about ten minutes' drive over the mountain's slopes. The Atlantic here is very cold even in summer, because of the cold Benguela current flowing up from the Southern Ocean, so many people just sunbathe and stroll, or swim in the calm rock pools at either end. A strong south-easterly wind sometimes blows, whipping up the sand. The beach is public and free, and loveliest at sunset, when the sun drops into the ocean and the mountains behind turn pink.

No, the Atlantic here is very cold even in summer because of the Benguela current; many prefer the rock pools.
