A small, clear river in the Sierra de La Macarena known as the «river of five colours» and «the most beautiful river in the world», because in certain months its rocky bed turns crimson, pink, yellow, green and blue, as if a rainbow had melted into the water. The red comes from a unique aquatic plant growing on the riverbed rocks, which turns bright red when the water level is just right and the sun strong, mixing with green algae, yellow sand and blue water. The colours usually peak between July and November. Getting there is part of the adventure: a small plane to La Macarena town, then a river boat, a vehicle and a walk across savanna, with a compulsory local guide. Strict rules protect it: no sunscreen or insect repellent in the water, and swimming only in set pools. The 2026 season runs from 29 May to early December, and visits are usually two- to three-day programmes. Many governments advise caution in Colombia, and in some departments especially, so check your own government's travel advice before the trip.
