Cap de Formentor is the northernmost point of Mallorca, at the tip of the Formentor peninsula in Spain's Balearic Islands, about 11 km east of Port de Pollença and 63 km northeast of Palma in a straight line. Mallorcans call it the «meeting point of the winds». Its highest point is Fumat at 384 metres. The lighthouse opened in 1863, when it could be reached only by sea or by a long mule track. In 1925 the engineer Antonio Parietti built the 13.5 km mountain road from Port de Pollença to the cape, winding between the cliffs. The peninsula is a chain of sharp limestone cliffs dropping into the sea, their slopes covered in scrub and pine, with small coves of turquoise water such as Cala Figuera between them. At the end, the white lighthouse stands on a sheer cliff, and from the Es Colomer viewpoint the sea roars about 300 metres below. Visitors drive the winding road and stop at the viewpoints, and on clear days some can see Menorca on the horizon. Private cars are restricted to the lighthouse by day in summer, when a bus runs from Port de Pollença; the cape is windy, so take care near the edges.
