Capão da Canoa is a beach city of about 64,000 people on the north coast of Rio Grande do Sul, one of the favourite summer resorts of Porto Alegre's people, and one of the state's most traditional and cosmopolitan beaches. Its coast was the land of the Carijó, Minuano and Arachane peoples before Europeans; it grew from the Sesmaria das Conchas land grant around 1800, then all dunes, marshes and clear sea, and became a large resort over the twentieth century. Today its beaches run 19 kilometres north to south across eleven beach districts between Terra de Areia and Xangri-lá, with areas suited to surfing, fishing and swimming. In summer it brings together holidaymakers from the state, Argentina and Uruguay, and it is known for its sunrises over the ocean.
