It depends what you want. **Golden Sands**, 17 km north, is the big resort: wide soft sand, hotels, restaurants and water sports — and heavy crowds, high summer prices and loud nightlife. **Albena** and **Sveti Konstantin** are quieter and greener and better for families. The **city beaches** in front of the Sea Garden are practical but not the finest. And below **Cape Galata** are small wild beaches quieter than any of them, with no facilities. The season runs June to September, and the water is warmest in August.

Cape Galata is the headland that closes Varna bay from the south, rising in a cliff above the sea — and from it comes the best view of the city and the port from outside. The district on the cape is quiet and residential among trees, entirely unlike the centre of Varna across the water, reached by bus over the bridge or by a small ferry in summer — the ferry being the more enjoyable. On the cape stands the historic **Galata lighthouse**, and a number of viewpoints over the sea entrance to Varna where ships pass into the port. Below the cliff are small beaches far quieter than the city's or those at Golden Sands, some reached down steps or a dirt path. The area is not an organised sight but a place people from Varna come to for the sunset and for barbecues. **Free and always open.**
