Cariló is a quiet seaside resort south of Pinamar, about 360 kilometres from Buenos Aires, unlike other resorts on this coast because its houses and hotels are hidden in a dense forest of pine and cypress that runs down to the dunes and the sea. Its name is Mapuche for «green dune». The story began in the 1920s, when Héctor Manuel Guerrero set out to fix the moving sand dunes by planting trees on his family's land; the forest reached the sea in 1935, and in 1947 alone some 660,000 seedlings arrived. Today building rules require large plots and low density to protect the forest, its roads are sandy tracks among the trees, and its beach of about five kilometres stays almost wild, with only a few beach clubs. Wandering is free. Come for walks and bike rides among the trees, the quiet beach, and the cafés and shops of its small centre; it is loveliest outside the January peak.
