A beach in the town of Painan on West Sumatra's southern coast, linked by footbridges to rocks and small islands in the sea, among them Batu Kereta, with the white Samudra Ilahi floating mosque on the water nearby, which seems to float on the sea at high tide, one of the coast's loveliest images. Above the town rises Langkisau hill, with a broad view over Painan bay, the islands and the ocean, a well-known paragliding site that hosts competitions. Off the beach lies the small island of Cingkuak, with ruins of an old Portuguese and Dutch fort, a few minutes by boat. Beach entry is a small fee of about ten thousand rupiah, with cheap boats to the island and seafood stalls on the beach. Painan is about two hours from Padang, on the same road as Mandeh Bay, so combine them in a day or two on the southern coast.
