Caroya was the first estancia the Jesuits set up in Córdoba province, in 1616. In 1661 it was bought by the priest Ignacio Duarte y Quirós, founder of the Monserrat school in Córdoba, who made it fertile land for maize and wheat and gave it to the school to fund it and serve as a holiday home for its boarders. It is part of the World Heritage Site UNESCO listed in 2000. The building is a simple country house around an arcaded courtyard, with a small chapel alongside. Inside, a museum now shows estancia life across the centuries, from the Jesuit era onwards. It opens Tuesday to Friday 09:00-18:00 and Saturday, Sunday and holidays 10:00-16:00, with free entry on Wednesdays. Payment is cash only. It lies close to the Jesús María estancia, so the two fill half a day.
