Carriacou is a small, quiet island north-east of Grenada and the largest of the Grenadines. It has low green hills, white sand beaches, turquoise water and small villages, with about 6,000 people, and its capital Hillsborough is its only town. Its name comes from the Kalinago word Kayryouacou. It is called the Isle of Reefs for the coral around it. The ferry from Grenada docks at Tyrell Bay, a sheltered anchorage where yachts ride out hurricanes, near the Sandy Island and Oyster Bed marine protected area. Old European dances and the Big Drum dance are still performed on special occasions. You walk Hillsborough's beach among boats and wooden houses, then climb the hill above town, where an old cannon looks over the bay and the small islands. Paradise Beach and Anse La Roche are among its best beaches. Life is slow here and there are few tourists. Carriacou is 57 km in a straight line north-east of St George's, reached by ferry or small plane. Walking is free. Swim only on calm beaches, as most have no lifeguards.
