German and Pomeranian.
The Casa da Cultura and Historical Museum of German Settlement in the hill town of Domingos Martins, about an hour from Vitória, is the first «Casa da Cultura» in Espírito Santo. It opened on 17 December 1983 in a mansion dating from 1915 on Praça Arthur Gerhardt. The museum preserves the memory of the German, Pomeranian and Italian immigrants who settled the state's mountains in the nineteenth century, showing photographs, documents, furniture and personal belongings that reveal the daily life of the first settlers, along with temporary exhibitions that change through the year. Domingos Martins keeps a Germanic character in its architecture and festivals, and the museum is a good stop for understanding the area's roots before walking around the town centre or heading into the surrounding mountains. No up-to-date hours are published, so check with the town hall or tourist office before visiting.
