Alcântara is a colonial town across São Marcos Bay from São Luís that pairs the ruins of eighteenth-century mansions with the Brazilian rocket launch centre set up nearby in 1989, a military site civilians cannot visit. That is why the Aerospace Culture House was opened in the town on 23 October 2003: to bring residents and tourists closer to the launch centre and explain Brazil's space programme in simple terms. The museum is linked to the centre's own communications department. It displays objects, pictures, panels, scale models and historical documents, and its newer premises have yards for static displays of space hardware and a room for videos and talks, plus a full-size replica of Brazil's Sonda 4 rocket. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00, and pairs well with a walk through Alcântara's historic lanes.
