The Poeta Brasil dos Reis Cultural House is a two-storey townhouse in central Angra dos Reis, the ferry gateway to Ilha Grande, on Rua do Comércio, listed by Rio de Janeiro state's heritage institute. The house was built in 1824 and stayed in private hands until 1985, with a merchants' club upstairs and a café downstairs. A hotel-chain owner then bought it intending to demolish it for a tower block; residents and a local theatre group that needed a home resisted until it was expropriated. It opened on 25 August 1985 as the first «Casa de Cultura» in Rio de Janeiro state, with local groups performing in the street and a concert by the youth orchestra of Rio's Municipal Theatre. A 2005 renovation restored its original colours and added lifts for disabled visitors, and it reopened in 2006. Today it hosts courses, weekly exhibitions, shows and talks. It suits a short visit before the ferry; check the programme.
