The old municipal market of Santo Amaro in south São Paulo is a historic building that now houses the «Casa de Cultura de Santo Amaro». The tender for its construction was published in 1893 and work began in 1896, and it was listed as São Paulo state heritage in 1972 as the last surviving example of nineteenth-century architecture in the area, standing in a central square. Santo Amaro was a separate town before becoming a district of São Paulo: it was raised to the rank of «vila» in 1832, gaining its own mayor and council, near the Pinheiros River, formerly known as the Jeripatiba. From that era the old market carries the memory of the town's daily life. In 1989 the building passed to the city's culture department and became a house of culture, hosting samba circles, exhibitions and theatre and music workshops. It is a short visit that fits into a walk around Santo Amaro's busy commercial centre.
