The Euclides da Cunha House of Culture, also called the «Euclidean House», is a cultural institution in São José do Rio Pardo, São Paulo state, named after the military engineer and writer Euclides da Cunha, who lived in the town from 1898 to 1901. Euclides came to the town as the engineer in charge of rebuilding the metal bridge over the Rio Pardo. His son was born here, and here he devoted himself to writing «Os Sertões» («Rebellion in the Backlands»), one of the great books of Brazilian literature, about the War of Canudos in the Bahian backlands. The small zinc hut where he wrote has been preserved and has become the symbol of the place. The house became a cultural centre in 1946, with a museum, a study space, original manuscripts and documents about the writer, and a permanent exhibition of fifty works by the artist Otoniel Fernandes Neto on his book. It is open from 8:00 to 17:00. Its main event is the «Euclidean Week», held from 9 to 15 August every year.
