The Casa de Cultura Jorge Amado is one of Ilhéus's main cultural venues, keeping the legacy of the novelist who made the city and its cocoa age the setting of books translated into many languages, the best known being «Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon». It stands in the historic centre, close to landmarks that appear in the novels. The house closed for a time after structural problems, water leaks and failing wiring were found; the city of Ilhéus restored it, improved its facilities and cleaned its collection, and reopened it on 28 June 2026, the city's anniversary. It now works as a literary and cultural space hosting discussion circles, writers' meetings, talks and programmes for students, researchers and readers of Amado, with partnerships planned with the local academy of letters. Check current visiting hours before you go, as they may have changed since the reopening.
