Casa do Rio Vermelho is the house where the writers Jorge Amado, Bahia's most famous novelist, and his wife Zélia Gattai lived, in Salvador's seaside Rio Vermelho district. It was bought in 1960 with money from selling the rights to the novel «Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon» to MGM, Zélia wrote a book about it in 2002, and it closed after she moved out in 2003 before opening as a memorial museum in 2014. The house keeps its original structure, furniture and objects, restored, with a modern display of more than thirty hours of film and projections across themed rooms: Amado's childhood, his ties to Afro-Bahian culture, filmed readings of his work, and two sections on Bahian cooking as it appears in his novels. Its garden, part of more than 2,000 m² of grounds, holds the ashes of both writers. It opens Tuesday to Sunday 9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:00). Tickets are R$20 (R$10 reduced), and entry is free on Wednesdays.
