Twenty thousand books.
Casa dos Braga is a cultural and tourist centre in central Cachoeiro de Itapemirim in southern Espírito Santo, housed in a century-old home where the Braga family lived for decades, among them the poet Newton Braga and his brother Rubem Braga, regarded as Brazil's greatest writer of the «crônica», the short literary essay. The family moved in in 1913, when Rubem was still a baby, and their father, Colonel Francisco Braga, was the town's first mayor. In 1928 the elder brothers founded the newspaper «Correio do Sul», where Rubem's first writings appeared. After the house was abandoned in the 1970s and became a restaurant, it was listed as municipal heritage in 1985 and opened as a cultural venue in 1987. Its sixteen rooms hold a library of more than twenty thousand books, a small museum with the family's belongings, photographs and drawings, and historic copies of their newspaper. At the back is the «Poetry Square», a small garden with benches for reading Rubem's essays and Newton's poems.
