Serro is an old colonial town about ninety kilometres from Diamantina, famous first for gold and later for its cheese. In its lower part, next to the church of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, stands the Ottoni family house, built in the eighteenth century and owned by Manuel Vieira Ottoni. The family produced notable figures in Brazilian history, above all Senator Teófilo Benedito Ottoni. A family member gave the house to the state in 1918; it joined the national heritage service's network of houses in 1942 and was restored in 1980 to become the regional museum run by the Brazilian Museums Institute. The museum shows period furniture, paintings, photographs and historical documents, including the old town council archive, along with traditional cheese-making tools and everyday objects.
