Cascada Los Alerces is a waterfall of about twenty metres in the southern part of Nahuel Huapi National Park, where the river flowing out of small Lake Hess tumbles through a gorge of dense forest. It lies at the end of a gravel road that leaves Route 40 south of Bariloche, passes Lakes Gutiérrez and Mascardi, then follows the Manso valley past Lakes Los Moscos and Hess. From the car park a short trail of a few hundred metres leads through coihue forest to viewpoints over the falls and the green pool below, and the road itself offers fine stops beside the lakes. It makes a full-day outing from Bariloche, often combined with Lake Mascardi. The national park fee, 35,000 pesos a day for foreign visitors from June 2026, is charged on this road. After storm damage the road reopened in October 2026 with timed one-way traffic and no large vehicles, so check its status with the park before going.
