The Avencal waterfall, 8 km from central Urubici on the SC-416, is where the small Funil River drops about 100 metres in free fall from a semicircular rock wall. Its name comes from the avenca, the maidenhair fern common in the area. The canyon wall shows the layered lava flows of the Serra Geral formation, one of the largest lava outpourings on Earth. It is easy to reach by car, and two private parks stand on either side of the canyon, one with a glass platform over the drop and the other with swings and viewpoints, each charging a separate ticket of about R$50. A zipline 270 metres long and 120 metres high crosses the canyon for about R$120-150. Prices change a lot between winter, Urubici's peak season, and the rest of the year, so check before you go.
