Castelinho Caracol, the «Little Castle», is a historic house in Canela near Gramado, built between 1913 and 1915 by the German settler Pedro Carlos Franzen and his wife Luiza Sommer. The family lived in it until it became a museum and tea house in 1985, keeping the original furniture, tools and interiors that show the daily life of European settlers in southern Brazil in the first half of the 20th century. The whole house is built of araucaria wood, the local pine, with a system of joints and screws and no nails, and it has 18 rooms, set in a garden with outbuildings including an old sawmill. The café serves traditional family recipes. It opens daily 9:30-13:00 and 14:20-17:40, last entry 17:30, with tickets sold online or on site. It lies on the road to the Caracol waterfall, so the two combine easily in one visit.
