In the north of Rio de Janeiro stands a building unlike anything around it: the Moorish Castle on the campus of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Fiocruz, the health research institute. The architect Luiz Moraes Júnior designed it from sketches by Oswaldo Cruz himself, taking the Alhambra in Granada as a model, and it was built between 1905 and 1918 with imported materials, in a neo-Moorish style with decorated Portuguese tiles. It can only be seen on free guided visits: Tuesday to Friday at 9:00, 10:30, 13:30 and 15:00, and Saturday at 10:30 and 14:30, with limited places; groups of more than ten book ahead. A taxi is the safest way there.
