Castillo San Carlos is the ruin of a French-style mansion on a hill above the Uruguay river in Concordia, built in 1888 by a French businessman with materials shipped from Europe; his family lived there only a few years before leaving it, and it stood empty, wrapped in stories. In 1929 Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, then a French airmail pilot and later author of «The Little Prince», visited the castle and befriended the Fuchs Valon family then living there; the friendship inspired pages of his «Wind, Sand and Stars», and many believe the family's two daughters inspired something of «The Little Prince». A Little Prince statue stands in the park for this reason. The ruins sit in a 98-hectare protected park with trails and river views. It opens daily 09:00-19:00, last castle entry 18:15.
